Remineralization

Balanced water that’s gentle on copper pipes and tastes natural.

How it works

Step by step

Remineralization adds small amounts of calcium and magnesium back into very pure water, or raises the pH of acidic well water.

  1. Acidic water enters

Water with a low pH is corrosive. It slowly dissolves copper and other metals from plumbing.

  2. Through calcite media

Calcite is natural calcium carbonate. It dissolves slowly into acidic water, raising the pH toward neutral.

  3. Balanced water out

Water leaves less corrosive, which helps protect pipes, fixtures, and water heaters.

  4. Backwash and top-off

The valve backwashes the bed to keep it loose, and the calcite is topped off as it’s used up.

Best for

  • Acidic (low pH) well water, common in parts of Maryland
  • Blue-green stains on sinks or pinhole leaks in copper pipes
  • Putting minerals back into reverse osmosis water for taste

Maintenance

Calcite is consumed as it works, so it’s topped off periodically, often about once a year, depending on how acidic your water is. We check the pH at service visits.

Good to know: Whole-home neutralizing media is used up gradually and needs to be topped off. We check it during service visits.

What it can help reduce

Every system is matched to your water test. Each link opens our sourced guide to that contaminant.

How well any system works depends on the specific equipment, its certification (such as NSF/ANSI standards), your water chemistry, and maintenance. The information on this site is for general education only and is not medical advice. Talk with a qualified health professional about health concerns. Water treatment equipment performance depends on the system, its certification, and proper maintenance.

Questions people ask

Will it make my water hard?

It adds some calcium, which raises hardness slightly. If your water is already hard, we may pair it with a softener.

What’s the difference from RO remineralization?

For reverse osmosis, a small cartridge on the drinking water line adds minerals back for taste. A whole-home neutralizer treats all the water coming into the house.
