UV Disinfection
Chemical-free protection against bacteria and viruses, especially for wells.

- UV lamp Inactivates bacteria and viruses
- Quartz sleeve Protects the lamp from the water
- Stainless chamber Water flows around the lamp
Step by step
A UV system shines ultraviolet light on water as it enters your home. It’s a common choice for private wells.
Pre-filtration first
UV needs clear water. Sediment, iron, or hardness can shade microbes from the light, so a pre-filter goes in front.
Water flows around the lamp
Water passes through a stainless steel chamber around a UV lamp protected by a clear quartz sleeve.
UV light inactivates microbes
UV-C light damages the genetic material of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa so they can’t multiply. Nothing is added to the water.
Alarm if the lamp fails
The controller tracks lamp life and alerts you if the lamp stops working.
Best for
- Private wells that test positive for coliform bacteria or E. coli
- Extra protection for wells near septic systems, farms, or flooding
- Families who want disinfection without adding chemicals
Maintenance
The lamp is replaced about once a year and the quartz sleeve is cleaned. UV systems need power to run.
Good to know: UV needs clear water to work, so it’s installed after sediment pre-filtration. Lamps are replaced about once a year. A well with bacteria should also be inspected to find the cause.
What it can help reduce
Every system is matched to your water test. Each link opens our sourced guide to that contaminant.
How well any system works depends on the specific equipment, its certification (such as NSF/ANSI standards), your water chemistry, and maintenance. The information on this site is for general education only and is not medical advice. Talk with a qualified health professional about health concerns. Water treatment equipment performance depends on the system, its certification, and proper maintenance.
Questions people ask
Does UV remove chemicals or metals?
No. UV only treats microorganisms. Chemicals, metals, and minerals need other treatment.
If I install UV, do I still need to fix my well?
If bacteria show up, the well should also be inspected for issues like a damaged cap or casing. UV is a safeguard, not a substitute for a sound well.
Other systems
- Whole-Home FiltrationFiltered water at every tap and shower. Commonly used to reduce chlorine taste and odor.
- Reverse OsmosisA dedicated drinking-water tap that filters out a wide range of dissolved substances.
- Water SoftenersRemoves the hardness minerals that leave scale on fixtures, heaters, and appliances.
- RemineralizationAdds calcium and magnesium back after RO for a balanced, natural taste.
- Sediment & Pre-FiltrationCatches sand, rust, and grit before they reach your plumbing and other equipment.
